Somos historia viva.

Somos TLALANKANN.

San Matías Tlalancaleca HISTORY

The Tlalancaleca Codex, written in 1550 with characteristics of the Nahuatl language and translated on September 17, 1865, by Don José María Cordero, states that the Church of Saint Matthias was founded in 1550, and its appointed overseers were Juan Cerón, Diego de Sabana, Diego Méndez, and Felipe Hernández.

During the colonial period, the town—like many others—suffered under imperialist despotism. In 1910, Don Sabino Díaz led the people in armed revolt; following his example, Don Santo Hernández and Don Rufino Macías also rose up, and through their actions achieved the rank of generals. Don Sabino was assassinated on the slopes of the Iztaccíhuatl volcano in 1917. The community was established as a Free Municipality on April 15, 1926.

Archaeologists Who Have Studied La Pedrera – A Clear Summary

La Pedrera, located in San Matías Tlalancaleca (Puebla), has attracted the attention of several archaeological teams over the years. Their work has revealed that this area holds one of the earliest and most important pre-Hispanic settlements in Central Mexico.

✔ Who Has Studied the Site?

  • Early research was led by German archaeologists Hanns J. Prem, Ursula Dyckerhoff, and Günter Miehlich.

  • Mexican researchers Jorge Ángulo and Ángel García Cook later documented pyramidal structures, platforms, and ancient habitations.

  • More recent studies involve international collaboration through the Proyecto Arqueológico Tlalancaleca, including Japanese archaeologist Shigeru Kabata and other university teams.

✔ What They Have Found

Archaeologists have identified:

  • Over 20 pyramidal structures

  • Dozens of ceremonial platforms

  • Hundreds of ancient dwellings

  • Basalt-stone architecture, monolithic basins, and ritual features

  • Evidence of occupation dating back to 1100 BCE

These discoveries suggest La Pedrera was a major ceremonial and early urban center, possibly influencing later cities like Teotihuacan.

The SEGADORES Crew — Guardians of an Ancestral Tradition

The SEGADORES Crew, known locally as Los Segadores, is one of the most symbolic and respected traditional groups in our community. Their work represents the ancient rhythm of the harvest—when men and women joined together to reap the fields by hand, guided by strength, unity, and the blessing of the land.

This crew is more than a team;

it is a living expression of heritage.

Their coordinated movements, traditional clothing, and the tools they carry reflect the hard work of generations who depended on the harvest for survival. Each step, each strike of the sickle, and each chant echoes the gratitude offered to the earth for its abundance.

The SEGADORES ’ Crew honors:

• the cycle of planting and gathering

• the dignity of manual labor

• the wisdom of ancestral agricultural practices

• the community spirit that holds our town together

During local festivities, especially around the celebration of San Matías Apóstol, the Reapers’ Crew performs to keep this tradition alive. Their presence reminds us of our roots, our identity, and the deep connection between the people and the land.

A cultural treasure worth witnessing and preserving for generations to come.
